Take an original drawing off the page and into a physical figurine

A strong source drawing communicates identity, not technical perfection

A character may begin as a child’s picture on paper, a tablet sketch, an original mascot, or an idea that has remained in a notebook for years. Converting it into a figurine should not mean correcting it until it looks conventional. The useful question is: which features would make its creator recognise it immediately?

Choose three to five non-negotiable cues before uploading. They might be a rounded head, one yellow horn, purple wings, a rainbow tail, an uneven smile, or the object held in one hand. Other areas can remain open to interpretation so the character gains physical thickness, balance, and a stable way to stand.

Source artwork that can begin the project

You do not need an existing 3D file. Useful starting points include:

• A child’s paper drawing: preserve the proportions, line character, and colour choices that make the picture personal.
• A sketch or original character: suitable for illustrators, OC creators, and anyone developing a figure they have designed themselves.
• Finished digital artwork: helpful for communicating a controlled palette, clothing, and surfaces, especially when the character is separated from the background.
• An organization-owned mascot: possible when the buyer has production rights; use the custom quote path for quantities and commercial use.
• An imagined creature or object: workable when the main silhouette and required details remain readable in the image.

On the Miniu homepage, select Other / drawing when choosing what appears in the image. This carries the correct subject direction into the app before you upload the artwork.

Capture the drawing cleanly before choosing a style

For paper artwork, lay the sheet flat and photograph it directly from above in even daylight. Check that the paper is not distorted, your hand does not cast a shadow, warm room light has not shifted the colours, and no wing, foot, or tail has been cropped out. If pencil lines are faint or the paper is creased, use the clearest version that still communicates the main silhouette.

Miniu starts from one primary image. Choose the single view that explains the character most effectively rather than preparing technical turnarounds the live flow does not request. The lighting, sharpness, and crop principles in the source-image checklist remain useful even when the source is artwork rather than a portrait.

Separate signature features from adaptable details

A concise creative request is more useful than a long unstructured description. Organize it around:

1. Core silhouette: a round head, short body, long legs, cloud-like outline, or another defining form.
2. Required colours: identify the body, clothing, wings, hair, or other colour areas in simple language.
3. Signature features: horns, ears, tail, glasses, patches, bag, or the object the character carries.
4. Mood: cheerful, shy, brave, mischievous, calm, or another emotional quality.
5. Open decisions: the back, texture, pose, or base where the drawing provides no answer.

A physical model needs a back, thickness, and balance

One drawing normally shows the front. A figurine also needs sides, a back, surface depth, contact with the base, and a workable centre of gravity. Miniu therefore interprets information that does not exist on the page. A paper-thin wing may gain thickness, a long tail may move closer to the body, and narrow legs may connect more firmly to the base.

That interpretation is not intended to erase the original idea. It translates visual language into an object that can be produced and displayed. Use the Preview to assess whether the silhouette, palette, expression, and essential details still communicate the same character. If the back includes a specific pattern, backpack, clothing feature, or tail marking, state it in the request.

Choose size according to visual complexity

A simple character with a bold outline and a few colour areas can remain readable at a compact size. Wings, horns, layered clothing, hair, tails, and several props need more physical room.

• 6 cm: suitable for a strong simple silhouette and a small number of essential details.
• 8 cm: our practical starting recommendation when the artwork includes several colours, clothing, wings, a tail, or one signature object.
• 10-15 cm: better for a prominent display character or a concept carrying more visual information.

Review interpretation rather than searching for pixel-perfect equivalence

Use the Preview to check:

• Whether the silhouette and personality remain immediately recognisable.
• Whether every required colour and signature feature is present.
• Whether the pose and expression carry the intended mood.
• Whether unseen areas have been interpreted acceptably.
• Whether a very small, thin, or floating feature should change for durability.

The Preview is a design-direction review. Physical production may still require small changes for material behaviour, minimum thickness, balance, and the selected size. The final object should not be expected to reproduce every drawn line or screen colour exactly.

Use artwork you are allowed to reproduce

Your own drawing, a child’s artwork submitted with appropriate permission, or a character whose artist has authorized the project provides a suitable source. Ask before uploading artwork owned by someone else, especially when the figure will be sold, distributed by an organization, displayed at an event, or produced more than once.

Broad directions such as fantasy, space, sport, magic, or an original heroic mood can inspire a new character. Avoid requesting an exact reproduction of a protected game, anime, film, logo, or branded character without the relevant rights.

A personal one-piece figure can begin through the standard Preview journey. For a commercial mascot, multiple character designs, repeated units, school awards, event pieces, or a project with formal approvals, use the custom quote form so rights, scale, and production requirements can be reviewed separately.

Start with one image and leave enough time for the physical process

Select Other / drawing on the homepage, upload the clearest artwork, and identify what must remain. Continue to the app to create the Preview, then choose the size, base, accessories, and final options once the character direction is visible.

Allow approximately 3-4 weeks after payment for production-file preparation, printing, finishing, packing, and delivery. This is planning guidance rather than a guaranteed arrival date.
